For the last several months the McAllen Economic Development
Corporation and the McAllen Chamber of Commerce have been working with
the City
staff and the Mayor and the City Commission on a number of economic
development
projects to enhance McAllen’s standing as a great place to live, work
and
play.
One of those projects
commonly referred to as “Central
Park” or “Centennial Park” is planned for the reservoir site
at the corner of Expressway 83 and Bicentennial. Several
months ago the City solicited proposals for the development of this
project.
The successful proposal was submitted and the City has since
joined
forces with the Henry S. Miller Sustainable Partners and the Trust for
Sustainable Development to do the preliminary design for this project.
During
the week of November 11-16, the Partners will be conducting a series of
Design
Charrettes for this project.
In conjunction with these
design charrette activities the
Partners would like to invite you to attend a presentation by
internationally
known Jeff Speck, who along with Andres Duany and Elizabeth
Plater-Zyberk
co-authored the book “Suburban Nation: The Rise of Sprawl and
the
Decline of the American Dream,” a book the
Wall Street Journal
has called the urbanist’s bible. Jeff’s presentation will be
at 7:30 PM the evening of November 12, 2007, at the new McAllen
Convention
Center and should provide a very interesting, thought provoking view of
where
McAllen could be headed. We would encourage you to invite your friends
and
other individuals that have an interest in the future of our City to
attend.
