HWNT Members shine in local elections

HWNT members Diana Maldonado from Austin and Lupe Valdez from Dallas won their respective races on Tuesday, November 4, 2008. Diana Maldonado won her candidacy for Texas State House of Representatives District 52 while Lupe Valdez won re-election and will continue to serve in her position as county Sheriff.
   Diana is a mother of two, and was previously the chair of the Austin chapter. She became the first Democrat to represent Williamson County in the State House since 1992.
   Lupe became the first Latina sheriff ever in Dallas County in 2004 and is presently the only female sheriff in Texas and in the country. 

   HWNT congratulates Diana and Lupe and all other Latinas who pursued elected office at any level.

Dallas member Mary Ann Kellam will participate in Leadership Dallas, a program from the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce that identifies leaders in the community and provides them with ten-month program where participants receive an in-depth exposure to the critical issues facing the community. The program selects up to 55 individuals each year.

The Fort Worth RSA committee, Executive Board, and past Shining and Rising Stars send congratulations to Diane Salazar, Mary Lou Martinez and Victoria Ruiz on receiving the 2008 Rising Star Awards. A special celebration will take place Sunday, December 14th from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Chadra Mezza. During this event, HWNT Fort Worth will install their new officers for 2009-2011 along with celebrating the Christmas Season. Cost $25 a person. Everyone is welcome to attend (profits from this event go towards the educational and leadership programs).

Vielka-Lee Heitz was selected to participate in the Power Pipeline Retreat to be held in April 17-19, 2009 in Dallas. Power Pipeline is a program of the Foundation for Women's Resources that offers a unique opportunity to connect with mentors and a diverse mix of emerging women leaders in an informal setting.
