Latinas Leading Latinas
to Build Healthier Families

The Health and Wellness Committee is dedicated to lowering the risk of disease and improving the overall health and well being of our members, their families and our community. We will do this by providing information to help Latinas identify their personal health risks, encouraging them to take personal responsibility, and motivating and supporting them in making healthy choices for themselves and their families.

Kid's Food Camp on Saturday, April 17th

HWNT Houston in partnership with CAN DO Houston, Kelsey Seybold and Lyons Elementary School for the Kids Food Fest and Fitness Zone on April 17th from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. at Lyons Elementary School.

Children can enjoy the Teddy Bear Clinic where pediatricians will use a teddy bear to show them what to expect in the doctor's office, learn to prepare healthy snacks with a hands-on activity, engage in a fun interactive exercise segment and watch the Veggie Pals perform to finish out the day.

If you're interested in volunteering for the event, please contact Daisy Morales.

March for Babies on Sunday, April 25th

HWNT will March for Babies on Sunday, April 25th!  Join the Health & Wellness Committee as they support the March of Dimes' efforts to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

Every 4 1/2 minutes, a baby in the United States is born with a birth defect.

The March of Dimes funds and develops research and programs to help combat issues of premature birth, low birth weight, birth defects and infant mortality.

Registration for the walk begins at 8:00 a.m. and walking will commence at 9:00 a.m.  To register go to www.marchforbabies.org and click on "Join a Team". Type "Hispanic Women's Network of Texas", select "Texas", enter your zip code and then select this walk.  Set your personal fundraising goal and enter all requested information.

In an average week in the United States:

  • 82,030 babies are born
  • 10,440 babies are born pre-term
  • 6,769 babies are born with low birth weight
  • 546 babies die before reaching their first birthday.

Help lower these last three statistics by joining our team. Together, we can help the babies of our country.

8TH ANNUAL TEXAS MED 5K on January 30th

Thank you to everyone to registered for the Texas Med 5K!   We had a wonderful time despite the cold and raised $200!  That was enough money to help fund 2.5 mammograms for women.  We couldn't have done it without the support of our members, friends and family so, thank you!

Here are some pictures from the race:

Thank you to everyone that participated in the October 10th Health and Wellness Event!

This past Saturday, HWNT hosted a Health & Wellness event at the Memorial Hermann Wellness Center. We had a great turn out and have only heard positive responses like the ones below:

“I’m so glad I made the time to come.. I’ve learned so much”

“There was so much good energy and sharing!”

“I’ve been diabetic for years.. and I’ve sat with nutritionist and dieticians and no one every taught me about how my pancreas works… or how it relates to my cultural diet. I just wanted to say “thank you”.. “

Special thanks to the following sponsors:
