and Beyond
Educational Series 2009-2010
2009-2010 is the inaugural year for the HWNT-Houston
Chapter Latinas Leading Latinas to College and Beyond
Educational Series. Our Educational Series is an education focused
program that encourages and helps young Latinas further their
education after graduating High School. Specifically, it provides
them with the tools to succeed in their personal and professional
lives. Our Educational Series, is a premier program that is the
product of a joint effort between HWNT-Houston, universities in the
area, local school districts, and the community. We have engaged 25
Seniors, along with 25 sophomore girls from the five high schools in
the Pasadena ISD, our program kicked off on May 30th.
Programming consists of five workshops, taught
throughout the summer and school year, from May 2009 through May
2010 which include:
College Preparation (including the application and
financial aid process)
Hispanic Culture and History, Public Policy, Civism,
and Politics
Professional Development
Life Skills
Garage Sale
It's 5:00 a.m. on a Saturday and four women sit in a dark parking lot with a U-Haul, truck and hopes of finding a Starbucks soon. Suddenly, another truck pulls up and Ginger with Pasadena ISD hops out with her husband armed with several tables and donations. It's 5:15 a.m. and the Education Committee and Pasadena ISD volunteers start working on what will be an extremely successful garage sale. On Saturday, March 6th, the Education Committee raised over $2000 with the help of donations from HWNT members, family and friends! Several of the young women from our program were out at the crack of dawn helping us set up tables, price items and run the register. It turned out to be a beautiful day and all of us went home with smiles on our faces and perhaps some new items in our possession. Money raised will go towards scholarships for the young women in our program. Applications for these scholarships have gone out and a select group of girls will be presented with their awards at our scholarship banquet on May 22nd.
Dress for Success
On Saturday, January 23rd, the Education Committee hosted a day long workshop at Dress for Success. Dress for Success was kind enough to have their volunteers show the girls their "closet" (the size of a small store!) full of suits, shoes, purses and more. Each young woman was fitted with a suit, purse, shoes and pearls for college and scholarship interviews. Throughout the day, workshops were held on etiquette, self-esteem, and healthy dating. The Women's Fund presented a wonderful presentation on healthy dating and HWNT volunteers gave a very informative class on etiquette and healthy dating using material from Dove's "Campaign for Beauty". The day was a success as everyone went home happy with their brand new suits!
Tour of University of Houston Campus
On Saturday, October 24th, the Education Committee took our 2009 - 2010 Latinas Leading Latinas class to visit the University of Houston Campus. A special and warm thank you goes to the ladies of Kappa Delta Chi Sorority for hosting our group. The weather was beautiful and the campus was buzzing with excitement about the night's homecoming game. The girls got to learn more about life on a public university campus, as well as important information on financial aid and how to stay successful in college. Thank you to all of the professors, Kappa Delta Chi alumni, and University of Houston alumni that spoke to our group.
